Bill Popp And The Tapes Record release party Nov.10th 2025
A Work of Art
Bill Popp and The Tapes
to Celebrate the Release Of Their New Album
New York’s legendary popsters invite you to their
new Album Release Party at The Irish Whiskey Bar located at
28-48 31st Street Astoria Queens N. Y. on Monday November 10, 2025, at 7PM.
44 years and counting, Bill Popp and The Tapes have been a fixture on the New York music scene since 1981, where the band played their first show at “Gerde’s Folk City,” the launching pad for acts as diverse as Bob Dylan to Sonic Youth. Popp has been recognized as one of the area’s most melodic songwriters. Having won critical acclaim in numerous tri-state and national publications, including Billboard and The Daily News, music critic David Hinckley said, “In a perfect radio world, more people would know the music of Bill Popp.”
This new album will mark the 13th release of Bill Popp’s music. The last release was in 2022 with their EP “Melt My Heart, and Then My Brains”. Since 2001, the band’s line up has stayed consistent with Gerry Barnas on Guitar, Roger Foster on drums, Mary Noecker on bass and Bill Popp on keyboards. On this record, Popp sings lead and the band contributes their backing vocals. Over the years, Bill Popp and The Tapes have performed in the New York and tri-state area, as well as in Europe. In more recent years Popp has also performed solo in Asia, South America, Australia and Africa.
“A Work Of Art” consists of 6 tracks that fell through the cracks,” as Popp puts it. “And including them in the new release will give the songs a fresh life.” One song in particular, “Alone in the Moonlight,” is a live recording of the original Tapes performing at the legendary Max’s Kansas City in 1981. Max’s, in its heyday, was a hangout for the likes of David Bowie and Andy Warhol, as well as where the Ramones, Johnny Thunders, and The B-52’s played before their days of fame.
The new album features 4 new tracks never released. The new ten song album, like their previous records, will be released on 121st Street Records, Popp’s own label.
Over the years, with many Manhattan night spots closing their doors, Popp’s music found refuge in numerous venues in Astoria and Long Island City, Queens, from The Bohemian Hall and Shillelagh’s Tavern to Culture Lab and, of course, The Irish Whiskey Bar, to name a few.
