Flat / Full / Inflated

Hungry to learn a few new skills? In this class of sewing and patterning techniques,
students will learn how to navigate the various dimensions of soft sculpture, using food as
inspiration! Students will apply techniques learned over three weeks to design and sew a
snackable object of their choice in three stages: (1) flat, (2) filled, and (3) completely
three-dimensional.

We’ll start by reviewing basic machine sewing techniques, then we’ll learn how to turn sketches into basic pattern pieces.

This course is a great introduction for beginners and will provide intermediate students with fresh approaches for patternmaking and soft sculpture.

12 – 6 pm (including a break) On Saturdays October 12, 19th, and 26th

Bring your own sewing machine! We have 2 available to rent if you do not have your own. If you wish to rent a machine, please purchase the rental ticket along with your admission. If there are no longer machine rental tickets available, we will not be able to supply one for you.

Joy O. Ude is a mixed-media artist and designer. An American-born child of Nigerian immigrants, Ude explores the concept of duality in her artwork. Ude earned her BFA in Fashion Design in 2005 from the University of North Texas. After working in the fashion industry, she also earned an MFA in Fiber Arts from the University of North Texas in 2013. Her work has been included in regional and national shows including: CraftTexas, Fantastic Fibers, Fiberart International, and ArtSeen. Her 2021 solo show, 9ja Vision: The Fiber and Mixed-Media Work of Joy O. Ude, was featured at Houston Center for Contemporary Craft. Ude teaches fiber-based workshops nationally, most recently at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts. Ude currently teaches elementary art at KIPP Philadelphia.
