New York Circus Project (NYCP) and Director Sam Landa will bring this production of Hamlet to Philadelphia July 24 – 28 at FringeArts. Philadelphia is the first of the touring production’s three major city stops in addition to Washington DC and Chicago.

Sam Landa, Founding Artistic Director of NYCP, is a circus arts virtuoso. At age 15, Sam moved to Montreal to attend the world-renowned L’Ecole Nationale de Cirque (ENC). After graduating from ENC, Sam attended Columbia University. While attending university worked as a consultant on acrobatic and aerial elements for Broadway and Disney productions. Since its inception, NYCP has produced shows for various NYC-based organizations, including the NYC Department of Transportation’s Open Streets and the New York Botanical Garden. Now, NYCP is excited to embark on its debut tour with Hamlet.

This interpretation of Hamlet upends what audiences expect of a Shakespearean play by blending theater with dance and circus arts to arrive at a thoroughly unique iteration of a well-known tragedy. Hamlet’s delirium materializes in an explosive group acrobatic tableau, Ophelia’s life flashes before her eyes during a last-breath contortion number in a water filled basin, and the ghost of Hamlet’s father’s famous monologue is reimagined as a solo aerial number, where the performer physically revolves around young Hamlet.
