Meet the Author: The Journey of a Lifetime
Dr. Eleanor Smith will speak about her book, The Journey of a Lifetime, about a young Eastern teacher who accepts her first teaching position with the Navajo Nation. Although it is fictional, the story delves into the real subject matter of horrific abuses at Navajo Nation schools in the 1960s. The author began her professional career with the Bureau of Indian Affairs as a first-grade teacher at a BIA Boarding School in Aneth, Utah. Inspired by her love and dedication to her country, and by the words of President John F. Kennedy, she joined the Peace Corps as a volunteer. She received her Ph.D. from the Sociology Department at Virginia Tech and is currently a lecturer and has dedicated her professional and personal life to her family and students.
