
Screening and Discussion of “Frederick Douglass and the White Negro”

The Commodore John Barry Arts & Cultural Center is proud to present a special screening of the acclaimed documentary film “Frederick Douglass and the White Negro” on Sunday, February 23, 2025, at 4:00 p.m. Directed by John J. Doherty, the film explores the fascinating and complex relationship between Frederick Douglass, the renowned African American abolitionist, and the Irish people during the 19th century. Following the screening, a discussion will be led by Dr. Joseph Lennon, of the Center for Irish Studies at Villanova University and Denise Burgher Director, Community and Curricular Engagement, The Center for Black Digital Research, PhD Candidate from the University of Delaware.
“Frederick Douglass and the White Negro” delves into Douglass’s escape from slavery and his subsequent journey to Ireland, where he found unexpected allies in his fight for freedom and equality. The film highlights the shared struggles and solidarity between the Irish and African American communities, offering a unique perspective on the transatlantic fight against oppression.
